Biography

24-year-old singer-songwriter and performer Mélanie René, originally from Mauritius, has won the Swiss final of the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest with her song « Time to Shine ». She will represent Switzerland in Vienna in May, in the presence of all the other European finalists.

The daughter of musicians, she discovered an affinity for singing at the age of seven and for several years she trained in the performing arts and song-writing at the Funambule Theatre in Nyon, Switzerland. This gave her the opportunity to learn her craft with great French artists like Michel Fugain, Claude Lemesle and Nicolas Hafner..
During this periodMélanie Renétook part in shows, concerts and radio and television broadcasts. Her talent was noticed at several competitions, such as the George Grigoriu Festival in Braila, Romania, where she was awarded the grand prize in 2009.
In 2010 she left for the United Kingdom to continue her musical training at the ACM (Academy of Contemporary Music) and the BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music). She was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Music in 2014.
Mélanie Renétells her story quietly, with reserve but also with a great deal of conviction.

«When I was youngI was shy, introverted and very self-conscious, I was scared when other people looked at me. It was during my time in the United Kingdom that I began to develop my self-confidence, to become who I really am.»

It was also during this period that she wrote her song«Time to Shine».

«I know there are lots of people who go through difficult times, who feel what I felt. What I wanted to say to them in «Time to Shine» is that nothing should stop them from living their dreams, that we have to be aware ofour abilities, understand that we can overcome the trials we face and smile to life once we learn to trust in ourselves.»

Then everything fell into place: the song was quickly selected to represent Switzerland at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.Mélanie Renécame through all the qualifying rounds and reached the final in Zurich on 21 January 2015.

«The evening of the final was highly emotional. When the presenter announced the name of the winner and it was mine, a childhood dream came true. Eurovision is an international competition, a candidate must be the image of the country she represents.Switzerland is a country that is dear to my heart and it symbolises multiculturalism. It’s a tremendous honour that the Swiss audience and jury voted for me.»

With her song«Time to Shine»,Mélanie Renésends us a strong message: that you have the strength to go wherever you want to, to move mountains, to change the world if you want to.

«I’m proud to have writtenTime to Shineand to be able to sing it on stage,to travel and to meet people. This makes me very happy. My goal today is to share this happiness, the love that I’ve been given and to show people that they can be proud of themselves and of what they have been through, that they have the right to love each other and to shout it from the rooftops, whatever happens. We must never forget that above the clouds there is always sun and blue skies, you just need to see them with your heart. That may seem juvenile, but my experience is the same as everybody else’s, and I think everyone deserves to live this moment: to shine, and to be proud of what they have achieved. Today these special moments in my life are yours too: our time has come! Let us share this love, this energy – and let us be proud of what we are!»

Based on this sharing principle,Mélanie Renéinvites internet users to post photos and videos of their moments of joy, of love, of pride – and these will be relayed to the websitehttp://timetoshine15.comif posted with the hashtag #TimeToShine15 on Instagram. A blend of smiles, positive energy and surprises awaits participants, who will shine alongside Mélanie René on this wonderful adventure.
